The Primeira Liga, currently referred to as Liga Portugal Betclic due to sponsorship, is the premier division of Portuguese football. Since the 2014–15 season, the league has featured 18 teams. The three teams finishing at the bottom of the standings are relegated to Liga Portugal 2, making way for the top three non-reserve teams from that division.

The Portuguese League was established in 1934 as the Campeonato da Liga da Primeira Divisão. It was known as Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão from 1938 until 1999, after adopting its present name. Over 70 teams have participated in the Primeira Liga, but only five have claimed the championship title. The most successful clubs, often referred to as the “Big Three,” are Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP. Chiefly, they have won most titles: Benfica (with 38 titles), Porto (30 titles), and Sporting CP (20 titles). The other champions are Belenenses (1945–46) and Boavista (2000–01).
Over the past few years, the Primeira Liga has bolstered its reputation. As of 2021, it held the sixth position in UEFA’s national league rankings and made its first appearance in the top five during the 2011–12 season, surpassing the French Ligue 1.
