The inauguration of the premier division of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), the Scottish Premiership was in July 2013.  This occurred following the formation of the SPFL through the merger of the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League. Notably, this division comprises 12 teams, with each team competing in 38 matches throughout the season.
