The English Football League Championship is commonly referred to as the Championship. Additionally, for sponsorship reasons, refers as the Sky Bet Championship. It serves as a professional association football league in both England and Wales. Primarily, it features 24 clubs competing against each other. Overall, it stands as the top division of the English Football League (EFL). Furthermore, it ranks as the second-highest league in the English football system, just below the Premier League.

Currently, the Championship has its roots in the original Football League Second Division. It transitioned to the First Division in 1992 when the top tier of English football became the Premier League.

Indeed, the present competition was established for the 2004–05 season, changing the name of the First Division to the Football League Championship. Essentially, the team that wins this division each season receives the EFL Championship trophy.  Similar to other divisions in professional English football, Welsh clubs can also participate in this division, creating a cross-border league.
